Tips for enjoy traveling Japan

I wrote an e-mail to the person who are going to travel in Japan.

I thought it may also good to help for someone who are going to travel in Japan, so I reprint it here. Sorry it's just an e-mail so the context and structure are not so well organized.

One of the best thing to enjoy summer in Japan is Firework.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it, but the place is soO crowded, so you should be prepare for it. Following is detail for one of it.

- "Tokyo Bay Fireworks"

Date: August 8, 2009
Time: 7 p.m. - 8:20 p.m.
Location: Harumi Undojo Chuo-ku, Tokyo
Access: Subway Kachidoki, or Tsukishima Stations
Fireworks: About 12,000

I assume that you also searched for some of places to visit, so I just tell you the places I
personally think interesting in Tokyo.

- "Asakusa" is old Japanese town. I guess it's interesting for you to visit.
http://gojapan.about.com/cs/tokyosightseeing/a/asakusatour.htm
Access: Tokyo Subway Asakusa station

- "Shibuya" and "Shinjuku" is the most crowded place in Tokyo.
You can feel the atomosphere of busy Japan.

If you are interested in fashion, you can see many outrageous people
walking in "Harajuku" and "Akihabara." Akihabara is also famous for
Electronics, manga, anime, and games shops.
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2164.html

- "Ropongi" is one of the most urbanized area in Tokyo and famous
for night clubs. You can find many foreigners.

- "Nikko Toshogu" is the world heritage shrine in Japan.
One day trip from Tokyo. About 2hours by train.
You can experience both old shrine architecture and nature of Japan.
http://www.city.nikko.lg.jp/fl/english/access/tokyo.html

About food, there're tons of restaurants in Japan, so it's difficult to introduce the specific one, so I may introduce some dishes you may like to try.

-"Kaiten Sushi(回転すし)" Cheap and good quality of sushi.
-"Donburi(丼ぶり)" is bowl with rice and different kinds of meat.
You should try "Gyu-don(牛丼)" at one of the most famous first food chain
restaurant call "Yoshinoya.(吉野家)" You can find almost everywhere in Tokyo.
At following URL you can find different kinds of Donburi. All of them
are taste so good!!
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2342.html
-"Okonomiyaki(お好み焼き)" is Japanese style pancake. One of my favorite!
If you visit Hiroshima you may find many Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki.
-"Gyoza(餃子)" - Japanese style dumplins.
-"Yakitori(焼き鳥)" is grilled chicken speared on sticks. SoO yummy.
-"Udon(うどん)", "Soba(そば)" and "Ramen(ラーメン)" are all different kind of
noodles in Japan. It's cheap, tasty, and you can find everywhere near station or
so on.
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e620.html

At convinience store such as "Lawson" and "Family Mart" try "Onigiri" (おにぎり)
it's a rice ball with different kinds of flavour.

Hiroshima is famous for atomic bomb dome and Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki.
Also "Miyajima" is famous to visit from Hiroshima by ferry. I've been there three times!!
It's a small island but good for sightseeing.

To tell you the truth I didn't know about Tsuwano well, I found that it's one of the great city
in Japan graded by "Blue guide" in France. I should visit there as well!! haha.

You go Himeji because of famous Himeji castle right?
But actually not so many things to see at Himeji so usually people don't stay at Himeji
instead of that they book the hostels in Kobe or Osaka. If you are using rail pass, I
recommend you to stay at Osaka. I think it's much easier to find cheap place to stay.
And Osaka is really interesting city to walk. If you have chance to stay in Osaka,
visit "Tsutenkaku." Near "Tsutenkaku" you can find many "Kushikatsu(串カツ)" restaurant.
"Kushikatsu" is fried meat and vegetables eat with special source. It's soO yummy!!

Finally, I think it's difficult for you to visit Kyoto this time, but actually my favorite place
in Japan is Kyoto. Traditional city with many temples.

i'm stuffed...

7/26 Kimchi

After softball practice, we went to Kimchi to have a dinner.
We ordered Purukogi, kimichi pancake, vivinpa, cha-pu-che, and hot tofu soup. Every meal was delitious!

7/31 Korean dinner

One of Korean friends Hyun-ji invited us for a dinner.
She made Purukogi and kyu-choru-pa?. Purukogi's meat was thick and big so my stomach became so full.

8/1 Ara-ziru(Salmon boiled soup?)

Japanese friend made Ara-ziru which is kind of soup usually when we eat in cold day like in winter to get warm. Although still August, Dublin is already getting cold these days, so it was good to have Ara-ziru. It's impossible to have it in summer in Japan...

Irish movie "The Magdalene Sisters."

I watched Irish movie "The Magdalene Sisters."

The plot is based on the true story about Catholic Church in 1960's Ireland. Features four women who were taken to the Magdalene Sisterhood Asylum known as the Magdalene Laundries in order to atone for their "sins." The reason why they were taken to there doesn't seem reasonable, but that shows how Catholic Churh dominated the Irish society in that time.
It's not a delight plot at all and makes you feel bad a bit. But it's a good movie to know about the recent Irish society.

Amazing Real Madrid...

7/16
Visited one of the most attractive tourist attraction in Dublin "GUINNESS Store House." You can know how Guinness are maken and its history. At the end of the tour, you can drink a pint of Guinness at the unique observatory bar with 360° view of Dublin city and beyond.
In the evening I went to watch Europa league match between St.Patricks(Ireland) v.s. Valeta FC (Malta) at Richmond Park near my house. It was my first time to watch the live soccer game in Europe. Stand seat is close to the pitch so it's exciting!!

7/17
Walking day at south part of Dublin, Bray to Greystone. Good nature, green, cliff, and sea.

7/18
Practice day for softball.

7/20
Today in Dublin, we had a match between Shamrock Rovers v.s. Real Madrid at Tallaght Stadium. Although I didn't have ticket, I went to the stadium just to see how it's going on. As expected, there were lots of fan gathering at the stadium. We could watch the Real players getting off the bus to the stadium, but I couldn't see them well...

UK travel and Riverdance

7/8~14

Friend of mine lives in Bristol, UK, so I visited her place and spent a week in UK. I went to Bath, Stonehenge, Cardiff, Oxford and London. In each city, I could learn about history happened in those places. Life of Roman era from Roman Bath, mysterious Stonehenge, Academical city Oxford, and one of the famous city for economic, history, arts in the world "London."
In Bristol I joined fantastic day of "Wine and Food fair" with friends. I tasted more than ten different kinds of wine.
London was much more interesting than what I thought. Especially, if you are interested in architecture and arts, there are lots of things to see. Even I don't have good sense of arts, I could enjoy and feel something from it.

7/15

Unexpectedly, I was invited to watch Riverdance at the Gaiety Theatre. "Riverdance" is one of the famous theater consist of Irish dance and music. Actually it was my first time to watch in a live show, but it was hilarious!! I really enjoyed how they make a step so quickly, how day play their music, and how they create their dances and stories.
After the show we went to have a pint to the PUB with person who sitted besides me and others together.

All about the Pop Legend...

Today, Michael Jackson's sudden death at the age of 50 brought reactions from across the music world and elsewhere.

Undoubtedly, most of the media around the world reported as the top story.

It reminds us how much impact he had all over the world.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of him but still of course I know how famous he is.

I remembered that I did moon walk at the camp fire when I was a junior high student.

May his soul rest in peace.

25.6.09

It's a Small World...

Yesterday I went to join Japan Ireland community meeting at Karma bar.

Surprisingly, I met with the student who I counselled before when I used to work at agent in Japan.

Actually, I didn't remember so much what we talked at that time, but he's been in Dublin since
April to study English for a year.

Furthermore, he was a friend with one of my client who went to Brisben.

Well, I worked for these study abroad area, so there's a possibily to happen these kinda
situation, but even so I was surprised about it.

I also met with Brazilian guy who used to live in Japan for 6 years, One Japanese women by
working holiday visa like me, and other students in DCU who are going to study abroad in
University in Japan from Sep 2009. One girl is going to Kyoto gaidai, so I felt really familiar
about it, even I wasn't a student at there.

15.6.09

Broken Lock...

It suddenly happened last mid night...

After my room mate put the key to open the front door, it didn't turn around and even it couldn't pull out.

We had no choice but to take off the lock from the door to get the key out.

Successfully we could get the key out from the lock, but problem was that we couldn't put the lock back properly to the door.

After struggling for an hour, we gave up and decide to buy new lock tomorrow...

What a pitty incident...

Leaving Party

6/2

Unbelievably, lovely weather is continuing these days in Dublin.

One of our flat mate Martina is going back to her country, so we had a leaving party.

I prepared "Okonomiyaki" which is famous Japanese dish especially in my home town Osaka. It is kind of pancake but we put many ingredients such as cabbage, prawn, spring onion, ginger, and whatnot...

I'm glad that everyone liked it. Started with white wine, red wine, and then finally I tried "Becherovka." Not sure but I guess it was my first time to taste it and I liked the taste!

Becherovka is a herbal bitters made in Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic, flavored with aniseed, cinnamon, and approximately 32 other herbs. Its alcohol content is 38% ABV (76 proof).

Ocean Bar is a funky bar on the Grand Canal.

Father Ted

5/7 windy and later shower as usual...

"Father Ted" was an Irish situation comedy television programme. The show depicts the lives of three Irish Catholic priests on the remote fictional Craggy Island off the west coast of Ireland.

It ran for three series, totalling 25 episodes, between 21 April 1995 and 1 May 1998 on the UK's Channel 4.

Even this series was made by Irish writers and it's about priests in Irish, it was first shown in UK instead of Ireland. Because it's all about stupid priests story, so Ireland doesn't want to show it on TV. But it became popular in UK, so later it came to show on Ireland as well.

Really funny one. DRINK, FECK, ARSE, GIRLS....

What a eejit...

Traveler

Since long time ago that I wrote on here...

Right now I'm posting from friend of my friend's flat in Paris.

3/15~20 I visited NY and Boston.

Watched Broadway Musical "MAMMA MIA!", go up Empire state building and watched the beautiful night view of NY, and took city bus tour to look around Manhattan.

Then I moved to Boston by Amtrak.

NY is really exciting city and there are lots of place to visit and enjoy but for me Boston was really nice city and I felt that it's a good place to live.

I took part in city view bicycle tour in Boston. It is tour that we can go around the sight seeing spots by bicycle with guide. It was good weather, so the best day for cycling, very comfotable and enjoyable. If u have chance to visit Boston, I really recommend you to join it!

http://www.urbanadventours.com/tours.php?tourtype=daily

Then after we can visit the place where we thought interesting later to see more about.

I went to Little Italy to have a lunch, Museam of Fine Arts, Fenway Park, Public library, etc...

3/4 Jack and the Beanstalk

3/4 cold again...

Cold day came back today, and I'm kinda caught cold again...
I'd better go to bed early tonight.

Today, I watched the film "Jack and the Beanstalk."
It's story based on the fairy tale but made it by saying that
tale is different from what we know.
In the fairy tale, Giants regarded as not a gentle or kind but
kinda make it like an evel. However, in this film the story
which you heard is not as same as what really happened.

Actually, personally I enjoyed the film that every history or
story has possibility to be different from what we know.
But as far as we have to learn the history, it's like our common
sense .

Of course it 's very important to learn history, but at the
same time we should be carefull that it might have different
aspect on it.

3.3.09

2/24 Shrave Tuesday

2/24 fine

Shrove Tuesday is a term used in Ireland, for the day preceding the first day of the Christian season of fasting and prayer called Lent. Lent, in some Christian denominations, is the forty-day-long liturgical season of fasting and prayer before Easter.

This day is also known as Pancake Tuesday, as it is customary to eat pancakes on this day.
Pancakes and doughnuts are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foodstuffs such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent.

So, we had pancakes after dinner today.

2/7 sunny day

Today, it was a lovely sunny day. so I went to The Phoenix Park (Irish: Páirc an Fhionn-Uisce) which is the largest enclosed urban public park in Europe located 3 km to the north west of Dublin city centre in Ireland. It measures 712 hectares (1,760 acres), with a walled circumference of 16 km that contains large areas of grassland and tree-lined avenues. The park has been home to a herd of wild Fallow deer since the seventeenth century. The name is a corruption of the Irish fionn uisce meaning "clear water."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Park

Fortunately, my house is walk distance to the park, so I walked about two hours. It was really comfortable to walk in the park, that I could refresh myself.

2/6 sunny day :D

According to the paper, WINTER 2009 is shaping up to be the coldest winter at Dublin in 18 years. What a timing I came to Dublin haha.

But the most impressed article from today's paper was that Galway-born ultra distance runner call Richard Donovan has become the first person on the planet to complete the ultimate endurance test which run seven marathons on seven continents in a staggering five days, nine hours and eight minutes.

His route was Nova Antarctia,Capetown,Dubai,London,Toronto,Santiago, and Sydney which temperatures ranging from -20℃ to 32℃.

It's incredible! I can't belive what he did!

That reminds me, Japanese comedian Kanpei Hazama is challegening round-the-world by running and a sailing boat, I wonder where he is now??

Regarding myself, today Nuala couldn't come to school, so we didn't have second class. After class, I joined soccer game at Trinity College. Met with Ivan from Argentina. It was bit cold but as long as fine weather , never mind.

3.2.09

2/3 continuous heavy snow...

snow snow snow...

Before mentioning about the weather, when I woke up today, I was shocked about what I did...
Yesterday, I was reading book by holding pen, then when I woke up pen was in my bed without the cap...

Oh,my goodness,,, as u can imagine, color of the pen was stained to the sheet of the bed. What a stupid I am... Nothing can do in the morning so I just left the home...

Same as yesterday, snow covered the ground, but transpotations were seems to be working so I went to school.

According to the The Irish Times,

“This was probably the worst recent congestion seen in the greater Dublin area. Thousands of motorists were stranded both inside and outside the city. The fact that it was caused by a light dusting of snow shows just how ill-prepared the city is for adverse weather conditions. In spite of repeated weather warnings, the city authorities were clearly unable to cope."
※quoted from The Irish Times03/2/09

In other words, lack of the preparation for the snowing condition was revealed.

Unfotunately, according to the forecast, freezing weather would be last for couple more days..

By the way, tonight I talked with host mother about the serious social problems in Japan, such as serious crime, chid abuse, murder of relative, and so on. She told me that these days broadcasts are full of bad news in Ireland as well; that's why she's not buying newspaper anymore. b/c she can't do nothing about the situation and just read about it, it's just makes you annoying.

In my opinion, people are getting selfish, they don't care much about the others. Talking example about people who don't pay fee of school-provided lunch. Usually we have school-provided lunch in primary school. Of course we pay for it, but recently some of parents doesn't pay for it. I don't understand what they are doing. It's totally beyond on my mind.

Anyway, I just have to do what I can do as possible as I can.

2.2.09

2/2 heavy snow...

heavy snow

In the morning when I went outside, snow had covered the ground. I had looked at the forecast, so I had known it's gonna be cold, but I didn't imagine that it's gonna be a much serious day...

After class, I came back to home about 4:00. After I arrived at home, snowfall started again. I was wondering about the transportations.

As I imagined, host mother came back to home late at quater to 8:00. She told me that it took about 2hours to came back from the shopping centre where usually takes about 15minutes drive. Heavy snows has brought to a standstill at road. She told me that this is unusual situation to happen, so the city and people were not used to it. Because of that, roads were dangerous, transportations were stopped.

Then I heard that in London, situation was worse. Some people was brought to a standstill at the airport.

In the weekend I heard that there were much snow in Vancouver where doesn't used to be snow that much. It shows that these freezing climate change covers all over the world...

Fine day.

After class, i went to american express service desk to exchange my T/C to cash.
However, surprisingly, there was no service desk in Dublin anymore...
What a damn.
Therefore, I went to AIB to save my money.

Then, Chika told me that she is going to play football today, so I joined with her.
We went to Harvard park which is located in south from city centre.
We played with Korean guys. We also played Korean style football, which we use
tennis court and play like an volleyball.
I was in a wave of optimism after the game.

I also met Eriko who has been in Dublin for almost 6month from Saitama.

Well, playing football was good relaxation for me. but... as a matter of fact, I
guess I was tired that I went to bed around 9:30 after watched FRIENDS.

1/22 Self Study....

Fine, later rain

Oh-my-god! Already Thursday....
Gee. Time does fly fast.

Today, Neil told us about fairies in Ireland. Especially before generation of his grandma belives in those things strongly as ghosts as well. Also it is interesting to know about Catholics. Although their languages and cultures are different, Catholic people has same sense of belief.
Compare with Japan, European has hight sense of belief in religion. Even most of Japanese are Buddhism I don't think we are religious as well as European.

After the class, I practiced with text book at the self study room.

Friday to go for end of this week .

1/21 waiting for GUINNESS

fine,bit rain

Amaia told me about the Basque Country. It is part of Spain but independent country. Their culture and language are different from the Spain. I might not have a chance to know about it,if I'm not in Dublin.

Amaia and Neil gave me messages by Basque and Gaelic. What a interesting, isn't it?

I want to drink GUINNESS.... but wait for the weekend.

1/20 Obama's inauguration

cold,rainy,windy...

The day has come.

The 44th president of the United States,Barack Hussein Obama made his inaugural address to the nation. More than 2 million people gathered to the inauguration. Before that, inauguration of Lyndon Johnson who had 1.2 million people were the most. That emphasize that how much people are expecting and interesting to him.

He promised a new era of “hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.”

So, what we can do?

Let's see what he does.

1/19 must study hard...

Cold.

Today, I had my writing paper back. Teacher told us that none of us are in a sufficient level of writing for advance learner. In fact, I know I'm not good at writing and I need to work on extremely hard to improve it. We had a serious talk about rather it's going to be a better choice to take FCE course than continuing CAE course. Even though it might be difficult to pass the CAE, I'll try and do my best.
Therefore, I was thinking about the plan for this week's afternoon, but in stead, I determined to study much harder for rest of the 8 weeks.

18.1.09

1/18 broken Curtain..orz

In a sudden curtain in my room failed down....

what's going on?!

I just stayed home and do some studies and etc...

During the supper, I talked about difference between Japan and Ireland with my host mother. Such as car; automatic in Jap but manual in Irish. drinking style; Irish pub and Izakaya style...

Interesting huh?

1/17 Party night

Hakim and Sachiko invited me to his colleague's farewell party.

Before the party, we went to TESCO to buy some stuffs for supper and went to Hakim's house to have it.

We had Okonomiyaki,Negiyaki and mussels; of course with GUINNESS! We don't have much chance to eat mussels in Japan but it is really cheap here in Dublin. I wish I had a white wine...

By the way, heavy storm was covering Ireland, so I was worried that we can make it the party... well, but where there is the party, where to go,eh?

"Dakota Bar" which is one of the famous bar for Irish people was the place for the party. I met with people from several countries works in Dublin. Croatian, Israeli, Hungarian, German and so on. One Israeli who lived in Tokyo for five years, talks good Japanese. It was quite interesting talking with people from different countries.

Later, we went to "Gay" club. There were quite interesting in some way as well.hahaha.

What a surprised was some store were open for 24 hours. I took Nite link bus which runs midnight.

Well, when I got home, what I found stupid about myself will be another story...

Then, I walked around Henry St. There are many shops in here. Now they are having sales so it's good time to buy something cheap now.
In the evening, I went to get some GUINNESS and fish'n chips to "The Bankers club" near the school.

1/13 you should watch the movie "Once"

fine.

Today, I took right train to the school so that I was not late to class. That's a relief.

I chaged my class to CAE from FCE. There are only 4 students in the class.
Amaia from Basque,Spain,The Basque Country is an autonomous community in northern Spain.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basque_Country_(autonomous_community)
Sangmi from Korea, and Claudio from Italy.

I had to write two articles in 1hours30minutes, so I got exhausted after that.
I hate and bad at writing but in order to pass the exam, I need to overcome it.I will do my best.

After class I walked "Grafton Street" which took place in the movie "Once."=「Onceダブリンの街角で」http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Once_(film)
